Officer Survives Near Fatal Shooting by Fighting Back

"Why I survived? I took it to him..." Officer Jared Reston
talks about when he was shot.

The experience of Officer Jared Reston is a cautionary example to remind us of the overwhelming importance of a tactical mindset. Shot through the face and left for dead, Officer Reston's indomitable will and non-quitting spirit helped him survive a deadly encounter with a suspect at a mall.
"I took it to him...I took that fight to him and I won that fight is why I survived. I'm not gonna sit there and let luck or any thing else determine my fate I'm gonna...fight and that's what I think everyone should do." -Jared Reston, Police Officer

“If you are going through hell, keep going.” Winston Churchill quotes (British Orator, Author and Prime Minister during World War II.1874-1965)

I recall one of my Army mentors telling me, "sometimes the only way forward is through." He was a Special Forces instructor offering advice on how to take on seemingly impossible circumstances. That was nearly 20 years ago and it continues to ring true. In our research at NTS, we continue to see examples of this mindset in prevailing officers, soldiers and even civilians in deadly force encounters.

This is one of the reasons NTS training has more academic training than most courses. We believe education drives belief system, belief system drives training habits, training habits dictate conditioning and that translates to more lives saved and the good guys having a better chance to win.

I would argue that the primary battle that most modern professional warriors face is not what most might expect, it is a war of the mind. In over 25 years of teaching military, law enforcement and over 10,000 students, I have learned that the battle is over ignorance and arrogance-both forms of denial.

There is a lot of good information out there. There is just as much bad. I believe the key for modern professional warriors, whether a soldier, law enforcement or even responsible citizen is to take total responsibility. We must do our due diligence to get ongoing training, stay fit and healthy and put good information and training experiences into your mind.

As my Mom always says, GIGO. Garbage In, Garbage Out. However, the inverse is true as well, Good In, Good Out. It reminds me of Coach Tony Blauers first commandment, "Thou shalt not, not train." Belief system and training are inextricably intertwined.

I think Officer Reston can credit his survival in this deadly encounter to his trainers as well as his indomitable mindset and will to fight back. He was experiencing "hell" and kept going. He had a belief system that gave him the mindset to fight for his life and the training and conditioning to do what he had to to survive. This is another good lesson for us all.

Eight Signs of Terrorism Arizona Law Enforcement and Dept. of Homeland Security

Eight Signs of Terrorism
Arizona Law Enforcement and the Dept. of Homeland Security

Sources and additional information:

Since September 11, 2001, local, state and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies throughout the U.S. have been working with American citizens and residents to keep our country safe from the threats of foreign and domestic terrorism.

In October 2004, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano opened the Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center (ACTIC) as the state's central analysis hub for real-time crime and terrorism-related intelligence and information. Today, the ACTIC is staffed with more than 200 detectives, special agents, analysts and other personnel representing 34 state, local and federal agencies. ACTIC was the first state fusion center to include complete integration of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Joint Terrorism Task Force. Today, the ACTIC is recognized as one of the leading state-level law enforcement and public safety "fusion centers" in the country.
However, the agencies and investigators who are part of the ACTIC rely heavily on information from the public to generate investigative leads and to prevent future attacks.YOU are the first line of defense against terrorist acts.
To help you and people like you be vigilant, the ACTIC, in conjunction with the City of Phoenix Fire Department, created a special video seminar, "8 SIGNS OF TERRORISM," to help members of the community, as well as local law enforcement and public safety officers, to better identify suspicious activities that could be related to terrorism.
Watching the following videos will not take much of your time, but could help you to identify and report acts you encounter in everyday life that may be related to ongoing terrorism operations right here in Arizona.
PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO WATCH EACH VIDEO SEGMENT.
What you learn here could help to keep you, your family, your community and our state safe from the threat of foreign or domestic terrorism.

Police Defensive Tactics and MMA Training for Law Enforcement of the Phoenix area

MMA for Law Enforcement
Police Defensive Tactics and Mixed Martial Arts Training for Law Enforcement of the Phoenix area
Safe-haven for Police offers high level training at low cost to cops

Law enforcement have special needs.  From the unique abuse their minds and bodies sustain in the line of duty to scheduling, privacy issues in training, to the specific procedures for use of force.

A new facility in Phoenix is has a program specifically designed for law enforcement.  NTS Tactical is located at Greenway and Tatum roads in Phoenix, just South of the 101.  The brand new facility features a fully matted training floor, heavy bags, shields, a tactical store, large projection screen, classroom and much more.  The facility is also located near several shooting ranges to provide unprecedented access and opportunity for training.  NTS Tactical has two campuses including Phoenix and Tempe locations.

NTS Tactical has partnered with a team of world-class experts to provide unprecedented access and education for training.  From UFC Champ and MMA Legend Dan "The Beast" Severn to the Machados, Frank Shamrock, the Gracies, Navy SEAL trainer Paul Vunak (protege of Dan Inosanto) and others, the team is as diverse as it is experienced.

NTS believes that it is important to not only have DT skills that are proven to work in the field, but have a good working knowledge of the skills being used by subjects in the streets.

With the popularity of such events as the UFC, that awareness of potential types of attacks means that officers have to be at least familiar with MMA (Mixed Martial Arts.)  Some also want to learn it as a means to stay in shape and condition the body, mind, reflexes and develop camaraderie while reducing the stress of the job.

For it's Grand Opening, NTS Tactical hired UFC Hall of Famer Dan "The Beast" Severn to teach a Defensive Tactics course at no charge for law enforcement.  According to Director of Training John Nottingham, "This is one of many events we will be hosting for training first responders.  Our goal was to honor law enforcement and show them the importance of good, ongoing training with subject matter experts.  It's not enough to know the minimum for the job."

NTS Tactical also trains military, security, and first responders.  The team provides mission specific, context driven solutions, scenario based training, adrenal stress conditioning, stress inoculation training, as well as advanced education not found other places.

Officers can take advantage of

  • Individual training programs
  • Seminars
  • Semi-private training
  • On site or mobile

Police Officers can also enroll in a traditional, modern, grappling, fitness or MMA program for just $49 a month right now as part of the Grand Opening special.  Punch card or monthly payment options make it convenient without having to sign a long term health club style contract.

Upcoming Courses
Officer Patrol Tactics
Ground Skills
Weapon Retention
Officer Survival
Verbal Jiu-jitsu (NTS version of verbal judo with a kicker)
