Real Risks and Costs Associated With Hiring Bodyguard Security
The role of a modern professional protector is expanding with technology. While the basic principles still apply, the methods are ever evolving. This change demands that protectors keep their skills updated. Today that means being familiar with technological risks such as smart-phones, social media (Facebook) and other security information factors.
Some clients are far more at risk from a heart attack than a physical assault. Others put themselves at greater risk by drug use (legal and/or illegal). These are the realities of being intimately intertwined with a clients lifestyle as a close protection professional. It is also the reason to have a confidentiality and non-disclosure contract with your client from the start. The bodyguards role is to protect the principal and his or her interests.
This takes a unique relationship with clearly defined parameters and a unique set of ethics. The client must know that they can trust the security professional without the risk of one of the bodyguards going to the tabloids or writing a tell-all book with all their gory personal details on display.
Another example might be a bodyguard or member of the security team who parties with the client, perhaps ingesting alcohol. These activities are completely unacceptable with any professional agency because those substances interfere with judgment. That judgment is critical for safety as well as discretion. Bodyguards are people and subject to the influences of alcohol like anyone else. A moment of indiscretion saying something inappropriate to a client, texting or facebooking a comment can have some far reaching unintended consequences. In our firm, we have a strict no drinking, no tobacco policy which is enforced without exception.
Some of you may be familiar with a popular recent tell-all expose book by a former bodyguard. This is what celebrities can bring on themselves by hiring untrained goons or the lowest priced bidder. The long term costs of such an error in judgment can be career ending.
Personal security is no place to be greedy or overly cheap. That is why it shouldn't be left to assistants, talent agents or managers alone. The collective team should interview the protective agency, do their due diligence and seek references and recommendations. Then they should hire on a trial basis (just as a reputable protection team will do).
Good security will often prove itself to be an investment rather than an expense. For example, some clients pick up hours in the day of new-found time due to the efficiency of a good security team. They may also find they have the peace of mind to be better at their professions, gain more quality time with family or even become more efficient due to less anxiety and stress.
What our clients fear and what they are more likely at risk for may be two different things. Our job is more than just to placate worry. It is to prepare for the likely outcomes and risks associated with the clients lifestyle, including work and social habits. This is also why candor and honesty is so critical for a protector and his or her client. This trust often takes time. The security specialist providing protection has to earn this trust with professionalism and discretion.
For Nottingham Sword and Shield Security Bodyguards teams, we make sure the fire safety system is in working order and carry our own AED machine. Before our client ever arrives, our team has run scenarios, evacuation drills and physical intervention training to be prepared.
Our security teams are required to be first aid certified and we assign a Bodyguard EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). Why? Because our clients are often more at risk for a heart attack than of physical attack. We see to both. From body armor, advanced threat assessments, counter-intelligence operations, research and contingency planning it is our job as security professionals to be prepared.
As protectors, our commitment is to anticipate these potential outcomes and have plans in place to thwart and or manage them. It saves lives and ads to peace of mind. That peace of mind can translate into higher performance for an executive, an artist or even a child who deserves to enjoy life without adult worries. This is why some of our clients engage our services to protect their families - one of our specialties.
These are just some of the costs that need to be considered in hiring a security team or bodyguard. The costs are often not the ones people first think of. With a bit of research and investigation, the results can make all the difference.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Street Fight Kid KO by Mother's Kick to Face
http://www.youtube.com/verify_age?next_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D6brIYwhL--I%26feature%3Dplayer_embedded Forwarded to my facebook page by Mr. Tim Larkin. Thank you sir.
VIDEO RATED PG13 for Language and Violence
BJJ Street Fighting Kid Knocked Out by a Mothers Kick to Face
"It doesn't matter what you know. It only matters what you can do in the time it is needed most."
This is not a discussion of style, rather of how one chooses to use the principles of the style in an overall safety plan. It is a reminder to not get caught up in the limitations how one trains in the dojo, kwoon or dojang (Martial Arts school or gym). Never confuse the mat with real life. Some of the habits we practice on the mat can be dangerous in real life application. Remember the context is more important than the style.
- Fighting is not self defense.
- Recreational Martial Arts is not combat.
- CQC/Hand-to-hand combat (H2H) is not street fighting.
- DT or Defensive Tactics are not MMA.
- Bodyguarding (Executive/Close Protection) is not Defensive Tactics
While one may draw upon each of them for developing attributes and skills, they each require modification and training to required standards of use. As we always say, the situation dictates the response. Ones chosen actions are based on the mission, objective and sum of all factors in a given time and space.
Most of today's popular grappling strategies for "fighting" or "street self-defense" promotes a high risk strategy of increasing exposure time to danger. The longer one tangles up with an assailant, in this context, typically to "gain and establish a dominant position", the longer one increases his or her risk in that situation. The lesson is once again a cautionary tale to remember that sportive fighting concepts may be effective in the ring with a referee, rules and a ropes or a cage, but can be very dangerous outside that context.
The moment you involve other variables such as multiple attackers, weaponization and the reality presented by the context of the situation is the moment you need to have combat flexibility. While grappling skills might serve you well, being one dimensional comes with significant risks.
It is not the style of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or grappling that presents the problem here. It goes equally for all styles-which I prefer to refer to as brands). The problem is the assumption that the one dimensional training strategy often employed in that type of protocol is the correct tactical approach to every situation. It's not about Muay Thai Kickboxing, BJJ, Boxing or any one "style". Why? They are each designed for different uses.
What if instead of a kick she used a:
- Gun
- Knife
- Club, Bat
- or Tire iron
Being one dimensional and making assumptions violates one of our precepts at Nottingham Sword and Shield Security: Prescription without diagnosis. I learned this principle from Mr. Gavin de Becker while training at his Academy for Protectors. It has become a fundamental pillar concept of NSAS training ever since.
Overly specific advice, usually based on strongly held beliefs and dogmatic opinions or an isolated incident of confirmatory evidence (it worked once in a bar fight or on the mat) can have some nasty consequences. This is just one reason why we place such emphasis on teaching concepts and principles along with problem solving scenario training under stress.
Some might argue that this is why it is so important to train in multiple disciplines, to be "well rounded". While we agree with the idea of cross training, it misses the fundamental point of my comments. Context, not style dictate the response. While cross training can increase options, it is still not necessarily contextual training which forces adaptation in the moment. Style is not why this boy was kicked in the face. It was his tactics, his approach to applying his style that caused him to be kicked in the face. This is why scenario training in like conditions is so critical to modern professional warriors and protectors. Risks like this can happen to anyone who over fixates on the wrong priorities or actions in a violent encounter.
Of course, in this context we can probably safely assume this was a symmetrical, voluntary engagement based on social dominance. Basically, he didn't run away when he could and CHOSE to be in a tribal hierarchical conflict - some misguided effort to prove himself. However, without more background we can only conjecture. For the purposes of this article we will stick to the conceptual lessons reinforced here.
We have thousands of scenarios on tape from over 20+ years of conducting tactical training events. Additionally, our research of actual attacks, violent encounters and interviews reinforce the lessons of violence. Interestingly, it reveals the overwhelming lack of importance of style and the critical importance of mindset, adaptation, stress management and regular, updated training, or at minimum being pro-active and creating an injury.
That is not to impune martial arts training on any level. In fact, we recommend that all professional protectors study martial arts as a piece of the tactical readiness matrix. However, the skills must be translated and functionalized, put in proper context and trained for application in a tactical professional's given field. Taekwondo, Karate, Hapkido, Hwarang Do, Kung Fu, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, Jeet Kune Do, Boxing, BJJ....We would advocate that one's instructor and work ethic are more important than style.
When I first began martial arts I remember one wise Master telling me that the ignorant discuss who would beat whom in a fight (eg Bruce Lee versus Chuck Norris), the uninitiated chatter on and on about style and those who "get it", the wise, are busy training and open to learn from anyone.
- The fool (ignorant): Discusses who would beat whom- Jackie Chan vs Jet Li
- The uniformed: Talks about which martial arts style would defeat another fighting style
- The uninitiated: Defends the style they believe they understand or practice
- The wise: Busy training and can learn from anyone "There are no superior martial arts, only martial artists."
"Train as you fight."

Officer Survives Near Fatal Shooting by Fighting Back
The experience of Officer Jared Reston is a cautionary example to remind us of the overwhelming importance of a tactical mindset. Shot through the face and left for dead, Officer Reston's indomitable will and non-quitting spirit helped him survive a deadly encounter with a suspect at a mall.
“If you are going through hell, keep going.” Winston Churchill quotes (British Orator, Author and Prime Minister during World War II.1874-1965)
"I took it to him...I took that fight to him and I won that fight is why I survived. I'm not gonna sit there and let luck or any thing else determine my fate I'm gonna...fight and that's what I think everyone should do." -Jared Reston, Police Officer
I recall one of my Army mentors telling me, "sometimes the only way forward is through." He was a Special Forces instructor offering advice on how to take on seemingly impossible circumstances. That was nearly 20 years ago and it continues to ring true. In our research at NTS, we continue to see examples of this mindset in prevailing officers, soldiers and even civilians in deadly force encounters.
This is one of the reasons NTS training has more academic training than most courses. We believe education drives belief system, belief system drives training habits, training habits dictate conditioning and that translates to more lives saved and the good guys having a better chance to win.
I would argue that the primary battle that most modern professional warriors face is not what most might expect, it is a war of the mind. In over 25 years of teaching military, law enforcement and over 10,000 students, I have learned that the battle is over ignorance and arrogance-both forms of denial.
There is a lot of good information out there. There is just as much bad. I believe the key for modern professional warriors, whether a soldier, law enforcement or even responsible citizen is to take total responsibility. We must do our due diligence to get ongoing training, stay fit and healthy and put good information and training experiences into your mind.
As my Mom always says, GIGO. Garbage In, Garbage Out. However, the inverse is true as well, Good In, Good Out. It reminds me of Coach Tony Blauers first commandment, "Thou shalt not, not train." Belief system and training are inextricably intertwined.
I think Officer Reston can credit his survival in this deadly encounter to his trainers as well as his indomitable mindset and will to fight back. He was experiencing "hell" and kept going. He had a belief system that gave him the mindset to fight for his life and the training and conditioning to do what he had to to survive. This is another good lesson for us all.

Security Specialist Teaches Self Defense Seminars in Phoenix Arizona in Response To California Prisoner Release
Arizona's Neighbor, California, Releasing up to 45,000 Prisoners. Self Defense Teacher Helps Phoenix Men and Women Gain Peace of Mind with Self Defense
By TheSelfDefenseMythBustersArizona’s neighbor California is releasing 30,000 to 45,000 prisoners due to overcrowding. That leaves many Arizonan’s asking “How many of those criminals will flee to Arizona and the Phoenix area?” Security Specialist and veteran self defense trainer John Nottingham says, “If you are concerned with personal safety then this program will help you gain peace of mind. It makes a great gift to those you love and provides unconventional tools for self defense and personal protection.”

Before you think Nottingham is just some local self defense instructor, take a closer look. John Nottingham, or “Master Nottingham” as his students call him, has taught military, law enforcement and over 10,000 students in his career. He is not only a multiple Black Belt holder with a 6th Degree Master Black Belt, but is a bodyguard trainer and owner of a security and executive protection company. He served in a Special Forces Reserve Unit and was asked to teach Hand to Hand Combat to Airborne Rangers, US Army Green Berets and other elite forces as part of a limited experimental unit program in the early 90s. Nottingham has also trained and taken students to national and international events in Korea and China.

“Most self defense instruction available to the public is well intentioned but we would argue often, misguided, unfounded, dangerous or just silly. The premise of our training is to use proven tactics for protection to give our clients peace of mind. We’ll show you techniques used to protect the President that can work to protect you and your family. Training gives options and reduces stress that not having training denies.” – John Nottingham
Nottingham must be doing something right considering that his programs have been used by agencies and individuals all over the world. His concepts and training programs have spun off numerous imitators and other trainers. If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, Nottingham should feel proud.
“This course is an introduction with sound principles for protection (self defense). You won’t earn a Black Belt in a seminar or learn to fight like Jet Li or for the UFC, however you can instantly apply some of these [self defense] strategies to improve the level of safety and security in which you live your daily life. Clients tell me that is worth it’s weight in gold.”, says Nottingham.
PART I
The first part of the course is taught in a casual and relaxing classroom setting complete with a multi-media presentation, statistics, insight into the criminal mind and bodyguard tactics. It even includes crime footage of actual assaults and a discussion and analysis of options.
PART II
The second part is hands on, step by step instruction without the ego or drill Sergeant attitude. Male and female instructors help clients learn simple effective they can instantly use the moment they walk out the door. Since these are moves they already know, they don’t have to worry about remembering them under duress, when it most counts.
